The rioles haven't had a season with more wins then losses since 1997. I was born in 1987 so they didn't start loosing until I was able to actually watch and follow the games. Apparently they were great before that..I wouldn't know. But the video below shows that there was once a great time to be an O's fan. The image to the right was a rough night..30-3, no that's not a football score, that was the worse loss in franchise history.
They have had some meorable years for reasons other than winning, both good and bad. There was the time we signed Albert Belle to the leagues biggest contract at the time and he proceeded to break his hip a month later. There was also that time Roberto Alomar spit in an umpires face..years later it would be known that he actually had AIDS..not a highlight for Orioles nation. Our saving grace was Cal Ripken Jr. the poster boy for clean hard working baseball players.
Recently the Orioles have learned from their decade of over paying mistakes. They decided to build through the draft and their farm system. We have a good core of young players who have long term deals in place. They signed Nick Markakis, a young stud outfielder, to a ten year deal. They also signed Brian Roberts to a longterm deal. The pitching staff will be the biggest question mark this year as Guthrie is the only legit starter.
There is however hope, with a new GM in Andy McPhail, and Peter Angelos taking a back seat when it comes to personnel moves, the team has a better shot at truly rebuilding. They will produce runs and the pitching staff will give up a ton so it should be an interesting season. It's tough when your competition includes the Red Sox, Yankees, and defending AL Champs Tampa Bay Rays.
